Attending the play OIL at the LSU Swine Palace Theatre, and a post play "talkback" session

Updated: Feb 15, 2020

Barbara and I were invited to a play presented by the LSU Swine Palace Theatre on February 9. The play was OIL, written by Ella Hickson, and tells two stories. The first is about an English mother and daughter, and how their life changed over two centuries. (The characters don’t age as fast as we do). Their story is superimposed on the history of the oil industry, from kerosene as a replacement for whale oil to the replacement of oil by other energy sources in 2050. I really enjoyed the play – both the characters and the scenes from different times in the evolution of oil and energy. The actors are LSU students in their MFA program, who presented a very well done and professional production. If you have a chance to see it, I would highly recommend it.

I was asked to participate in a “talkback” session after the play, discussing my thoughts about the play. The video above is my response to a question about the role of the industry in Louisiana.
